The world is beautiful and in need of enjoyment and broken and in need of healing (we should take both just as seriously).

bit by bit

The web makes us think we own everyone’s personal story. But the real world lets a story emerge, bit by bit, as it’s earned though friendship.

I have no greater love or higher respect than for the people whose stories I’ve earned.

REST is the ultimate humiliation because in order to rest, we must admit we are not necessary; that the world can get along without us, that God’s work does not depend on us.
sit in that… for as long as it takes

creators

We create because we were made to create, having been made in the image of God, whose first role was Creator … we won’t feel whole and healthy and alive until we do.

There are some artists who can create around the clock, who feel art coursing through their very veins, who can go without sleep and food and human interaction for days while they revel in the rich universe of their own minds. But I think that for most of us, its hard work, fraught with fear and self-consciousness, and that its much easier to make dinner or mow the lawn or reply to emails.

But we do it because it makes us feel aware and alive and created for a purpose more than almost anything else in our lives. There are a zillion things I don’t do well, a thousand I do just because I am human and I have to and when I do them I certainly don’t feel any spark of having been created for something very specific and tender. But every once in awhile, when I write, I feel that feeling of a thousand slender threads coming together, strands of who I’ve been and who I’m becoming, the long moments at the computer and tiny bits of courage, the middle of the night prayers and the exact way God made me, not wrong or right, just me. I feel like I’m doing what I came to do, in the biggest sense. Doing the hard work of writing and creating makes me feel like I am paying my rent on a cosmic level, doing the thing that I can do to make the world a little better decorated. Writing wakes me up, that’s why I write, because sometimes, every once in awhile, I feel entirely at home in the universe.

One true sentence

Sometimes when I was starting a new story and I could not get it going, I would sit in front of the fire and squeeze the peel of the little oranges into the edge of the flame and watch the sputter of blue that they made. I would stand and look out over the roofs of Paris and think, “Do not worry. You have always written before and you will write now. All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.” So finally I would write one true sentence, and then go on from there. It was easy then because there was always one true sentence that I knew or had seen or had heard someone say. If I started to write elaborately, or like someone introducing or presenting something, I found that I could cut that scrollwork or ornament out and throw it away and start with the first true simple declarative sentence I had written.

Secrets

It all began with a simple lie that escalated into an enormous fabricated story, as all secrets do. The final fable unraveling as Emily, Amory and I walked out the door on a Wednesday morning convincing our roommate that we were going for a weekend roadtrip to San Francisco and hiking in Santa Cruz. And yet we hadn’t packed a single hiking boot.

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;—
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

normality is overrated

image

From the cradle to the grave the pressure is on to be normal. My guess is that there was a time - perhaps when you were very young- when you had at least a fleeting notion of your own genius and were just waiting for some authority figure to come along and validate it for you.

But non ever came.

i prefer the tops of clouds

The Florentine poet Dante Alighieri wrote; ‘God is not merely a blinding vision of glorious light, but that He is, most of all, l’amor che move il sole e l’altre stelle…

::the love that moves the sun and the other stars::

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free
